There were definitely more pros than cons to the expatriate lifestyle, but I'm going to guess in small-town Georgia you didn't have to worry about being bombed. There were not one, but two active terrorist groups in Peru in the 1980s: Sendero Luminoso and Movimiento Revolucionario Tupac Amaru.
