The lunatics have always been part of the Devil's Pact that is the modern GOP. They just were successfully subordinated prior to the social media age (where they can reach critical mass they couldn't before) and Trump leveraging them for his own ambitions.

The modern Republican Party has coalesced around two priorities: plutocrats and the ex-urban (rural, white, Christian, older). This puts them on the wrong side of every major demographic trend in America. My best guess for MAGA is they feel they have been disrespected (some truth to this) and that they are losing "their" America. There's also an apocalyptic evangelical element to it. And the racism. And they've chosen Trump as their champion.

I don't know where we go from here. I don't know if there is any reconciliation between the functionally two Americas. It's power politics from here on out.
